Poetry at Present (Essay Index Reprint Series)

"This book was intended [ . . . ] as an introduction to the works of certain contemporary poets, for those readers who do not know them, while not being, it is hoped, entirely without interest for those who do. At times, when the mind of the instructor is jaded, a remark with which he disagrees may prove exciting, and one with which he agrees is sufficiently reminiscent to be helpful. Criticism as an art which attempts, therefore, in another medium, to create experiences as full and satisfying as those of the work it is discussing, has not been attempted here, and will certainly not be found. The essays are utilitarian, whereas real criticism aims always at its own absolute being". -- From the preface

Author and scholar Charles Williams (1886-1945) joined, in 1908, the staff of the Oxford University Press, the publishing house in which he worked for the rest of his life. Throughout these years, poetry, novels, plays, biographies, history, literary criticism, and theology poured from his pen. At the beginning of the Second World War the publishing house was evacuated to Oxford where, in addition to his own writing and his editorial work for the Press, he taught in the University. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Alps: Or, Sketches Of Life And Nature In The Mountains (Cambridge Library Collection - Travel, Europe)

Following the precedent and standards set by the Baedeker guides, travel literature enjoyed great popularity during the later nineteenth century. This guidebook to the Alps, written by Hermann Alexander Berlepsch (1814?–83) and translated from German by the renowned author and mountaineer Leslie Stephen (1832–1904), was first published in English in 1861. This was during the golden age of alpinism, when many major peaks were ascended for the first time. While later mountaineers concentrated on climbing as a sport, earlier expeditions were of a more scientific nature; this guidebook, which provides detailed information pertaining to the geology, flora and fauna of the Alps, is a reflection of this ambition. Also containing descriptions of village life and Alpine customs, it enjoyed a significant readership in its day and was also translated into French. It remains an instructive work in the history of alpinism and travel writing.

First published in English in 1861, during the golden age of alpinism and travel writing, this work by Hermann Alexander Berlepsch (1814?–83) was translated from German by Leslie Stephen (1832–1904), a renowned British mountaineer in his day. Mimi

A beautifully written and touching story about one young girl's life following the sudden and unexpected death of her mother.

Despite Mrs Lemon's extra sweeties, and sneaky peaks at her sisters' diary, Mimi is struggling. Her dad is always sad, her sister has a horrible secret, and 151 days ago her mammy died. What is Mimi to do? Mimi's tale is a compassionate, immensely moving, and gently humorous story from newcomer John Newman that powerfully captures the importance of family, of supporting and understanding one another, and sticking up for yourself when other people don’t understand.

This is not a maudlin book; it is poignant and funny and real. John Newman handles his subject with insight and sensitivity and manages to keep the resolution realistic as well as positive. * The Scotsman * Delightful..I found this book difficult to put down and will not easily forget the story * Woman Alive * --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Letters from an American Farmer

This was the first Letter from America. Hector de Crevecouer was a Frenchman who settled in America in the 1760s and started farming in New York, marrying into an old colonial family of English stock. Happy in his new identity, he showed a remarkable literary skill in his new language and put this to good use in his book, "Letters from an American Farmer", which was first published in London in 1782. The Farmer is a third generation American describing the New World to a friend in Britain. Family life, the farm, the countryside, it is all here, described in vivid and remarkably modern language. Drawing on de Crevecoeur's own travels, the Farmer visits Nantucket Island to find wide-spread drug taking, He witnesses the horrors of slavery in the South. He also addresses the wider issues and ask; What is an American? Until the end the loyal subject of George III, he views the pending break with Britain with it foreboding. The book was a huge success in Britain and America and was praised by George Washington. Later critics like D H Lawrence have admired it. "Letters From an American Farmer" is the first edited edition of Hector de Crevecouer's book designed for today's reader.

Monsters of Architecture: Anthropomorphism in Architectural Theory (325)

This book is a theoretical narrative for a reader who is willing to be bewitched by a theory that sees the presence of human bodies in the constructed world. Frascari theorizes that if the human body is an appropriate creative expression for the development of an architectural form, then the body can be viewed as a useful tool for activating the imagination and applying the meanings and reasons that are necessary in architectural production. The author presents the bodily basis of architectural production as it develops out of the secularization of the myth of the body in architectural demonstrations. Frascari suggests that we think of buildings in terms of the action and structure of our bodily habits, in the same way as we think of our bodies from the vantage point of our dwelling habits. This inquiry into the relationship between theory and practice in the discipline of architecture is from a semiotic point of view. It introduces some of the current theoretical-philosophical and methodological structures and procedures which support the author's inquiry, and provides a connection between the inquiry and various theories of architects. Frascari's book includes an important historical investigation into a neglected area and will be of great interest to students of semiotics, phenomenology, and architectural theory.

In a Land of Paper Gods

Jiangxi Province, China, 1941

Atop the fabled mountain of Lushan, celebrated for its temples, capricious mists and plunging ravines, perches a boarding school for the children of British missionaries. As her parents pursue their calling to bring the gospel to China's most remote provinces, ten-year-old Henrietta S. Robertson discovers that she has been singled out for a divine calling of her own.

Etta is quick to share the news with her dorm mates, and soon even Big Bum Eileen is enlisted in the Prophetess Club, which busies itself looking for signs of the Lord's intent.(Hark.)As rumours of war grow more insistent, so the girls' quest takes on a new urgency - and in such a mystical landscape, the prophetesses find that lines between make believe and reality, good and bad, become dangerously blurred. So Etta's pilgrimage begins.

A story of a child far from home and caught between two cultures, In A Land of Paper Gods marries exuberant imagination with sharp pathos, and introduces Rebecca Mackenzie as a striking and original new voice.

Set in a missionary school in China... carries echoes of Empire of the Sun and The Poisonwood Bible (Observer (2016 Highlights))Infused with a delicate, melancholy note of nostalgia, Mackenzie's depiction of a bygone world is vividly realised (Independent)Such a wonderful voice, very funny and hugely moving (Anna James @ The Bookseller)An evocative and involving novel with a wonderful setting (Woman & Home)A richly imagined novel that cleverly intertwines two cultures (Daily Mail)Mackenzie is a self-assured, poetic storyteller... The untameable beauty of China's Lushan mountain and the dangers that lie beyond are echoed in the dramatic landscapes that Etta must navigate within herself. Her fate will linger in your thoughts long after the story ends (Claire King, author of THE NIGHT RAINBOW)Really enjoyed IN A LAND OF PAPER GODS - a dreamlike tale, like a cross between Picnic at Hanging Rock and Empire of the Sun... lovely prose and a great setting (Stav Sherez)A beautifully poignant book... a story full of adolescent verve, young girls coming of age as the world around them falls apart, that remains somehow delightful, both playful and tender, as it breaks your heart. I loved it. (Lindsay Hawdon, author of JAKOB'S COLOURS)Henrietta S. Robertson is a beguiling, wilful and wonderfully realised creation, whose humour, imagination and yearning will captivate readers... this is a wonderful debut (Jackie Copleton, author of A DICTIONARY OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING)This coming of age tale with a loveable protagonist, set in a fascinating time and a beautiful location is a breath-taking debut and one that will definitely capture many hearts, as it did my own (The Tattoed Book)Its pleasures come in discovering Etta's character, seeing her grow, and the atmosphere of melancholy and loss that infuses the book (Emerald Street)[A] beautifully imagined novel, at times whimsical and at others harrowing (Sunday Express S Magazine)An intriguing, well told story, beautifully descriptive of the China of that period (Choice)A beautifully conjured debut (Sainsbury's Magazine)A beautifully written coming of age story (Red - Books of 2016)

Understanding Credit Derivatives and Related Instruments

Understanding Credit Derivatives and Related Instruments, Second Edition is an intuitive, rigorous overview that links the practices of valuing and trading credit derivatives with academic theory. Rather than presenting highly technical explorations, the book offers summaries of major subjects and the principal perspectives associated with them.

The book's centerpiece is pricing and valuation issues, especially valuation tools and their uses in credit models. Five new chapters cover practices that have become commonplace as a result of the 2008 financial crisis, including standardized premiums and upfront payments. Analyses of regulatory responses to the crisis for the credit derivatives market (Basel III, Dodd-Frank, etc.) include all the necessary statistical and mathematical background for readers to easily follow the pricing topics.

Every reader familiar with mid-level mathematics who wants to understand the functioning of the derivatives markets (in both practical and academic contexts) can fully satisfy his or her interests with the comprehensive assessments in this book.

Chinese Love Poetry (Gift Books)

The three arts of poetry, calligraphy and painting are regarded in China as the Triple Excellence, and they are brought together here in a beautifully presented anthology of forty Chinese love poems ranging from the earliest known works in the famous Book of Songs to the work of Chairman Mao and other twentiethcentury poets, including poignant examples from the high point of Chinese poetry in the Tang dynasty (618906). The subject of all the poems and extracts is love, in all its variations: the love of husbands and wives, family and friends, times and places as well as courtship, passion and parting. Selected English translations by respected scholars are each illustrated with a scene from a Chinese painting or print in the collection of the British Museum. Each poem is also illuminated by the artistic brushwork calligraphy of Qu Lei Lei. Jane Portals introduction summarizes the history and development of Chinese poetry, and she provides brief biographical notes on the poets as well as suggestions for further reading.

Free Electricity: And Other Popular Myths

Here in the southwest, we have an inordinate number of sunny days. It would simply make sense to go solar power on as much as we could. The area also has its share of windy days, therefore, wind turbines come to mind. Alas, there is still the cost of buying the equipment, and yes, the prohibitive cost of just doing business. In a perfect world, all this would be free. Still, there’s always someone’s hand in the till; landowners, power companies, politicians. Again the little guy bears the brunt for the cost of production and infrastructure, while the wealthy don’t care. At this time, any thought about getting ahead and making things right is just a myth. There are too many power-players willing to take gambles with lives and money.

Venice

If you approach Venice by way of the lagoon, the city appears to be as homogenous as a single building. But as soon as you step into its shadowy alleys, you will be captivated by the architectural finesse of the palazzi, churches, and private residential palaces where the eye is drawn to the dazzling stylistic variety of Moorish window arches adjacent to balconies in Venetian Gothic and severe Renaissance facades. This classic volume offers detailed insight into the broad spectrum of architecture, sculpture, and painting of the city on the lagoon. The authors chronologically progress through the stages of Venetian art history from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries. More than 500 illustrations document the eventful artistic development of this exceptional city, whose monuments have been largely preserved until today.

Even an expensive book is a tiny fraction of the cost of a trip and it can last ever so much longer. Two great gift giving candidates come to us this season from H.F. Ullman. Florence: Art and Architecture and Venice: The Golden Centuries are both massive, impressive, filled with wonderful information and both books are relative bargains: pound for pound, these two might just be the best book bargains out there!Neither of these books are contemporary travel guides which, in many ways, make them much better gifts. The information contained herein is not time sensitive or dependent. These are art books and, considering the topic at hand, both deal with the artistic history of the city under discussion. Noted scholars and historians contribute chapters to do with their own areas of expertise, while hundreds of images in each book complete the full illustration of two of the most artistically important cities in history.January Magazine coverage"VENICE: The Golden Centuries ISBN-10: 384800013X

The Odyssey

Journey with Ulysses as he battles to bring his victorious, but decimated, troops home from the Trojan War, dogged by the wrath of the god Poseidon at every turn. Having been away for twenty years, little does he know what awaits him when he finally makes his way home.

Wonderfully readable... Just the right blend of roughness and sophistication. (Garry Wills, "The New Yorker") Mr. Fagles has been remarkably successful in finding a style that is of our time and yet timeless. Mortal Diamond: Poems

In this new collection of poems—his most philosophically probing and poetically revealing to date—Durs Grünbein takes us on a spiritual journey through the labyrinthine cosmos of the human soul and its manifold embodiments across the ages. Addressing us in his own voice as well as through the prisms of Seneca, Augustine, Descartes, Spinoza, Pascal, Malebranche, Vermeer, and others, Grünbein subtly and lovingly traces the paradoxes of creatureliness—its joys and sufferings, its resilience and fragility—to remind us of the “mortal diamond from the hands of nature” that is life.

One of the world's greatest living poets and essayists, Dresden-born Durs Grunbein has been the recipient of many national and international awards, including the Berlin Literature Prize, the Georg Buchner Prize, the Premio Internazionale di Poesia Pier Paolo Pasolini, the US Independent Publisher Book Award, and the Tomas Trantromer Prize. Since 1988, when the then twenty- five-year-old's first collection of poetry, Gray Zone in the Morning, appeared a mordantly poignant poetic reckoning with life in the former East Germany Durs Grunbein has published more than twenty books of poetry and prose, which have been translated into dozens of languages.

The Problems of Privatization: An International Analysis

From 1997 to 2001, more than 4,000 privatization operations have been carried out in more than 100 countries, bringing in government revenues of over 1,362 billion dollars. The phenomenon, which grew exponentially at the end of the 1990s and then abruptly slowed down, had dramatic consequences on the performance of state-owned enterprises and a significant impact on industrialized countries, as well as emerging and less developed economies. Yet there have been surprisingly few attempts to provide a systematic empirical account of the privatization process at the worldwide level.

Why do governments privatize? Why do some countries accomplish large-scale privatization programmes, and others never privatize at all? Is privatization a trend or a cycle? Furthermore, how do governments privatize? Do governments really transfer ownership and control of state-owned enterprises or does private ownership tend to coexist with public control?

This book provides some answers to these important questions trying to test research hypotheses set forth by the recent economic theory of privatization.

Comprehensive cross-country empirical analyses carried out over a period of more than twenty years are used in the book to show that privatization has taken place all over the world, sometimes spontaneously, more often under the pressure of economic and budgetary constraints. Several of the goals of the privatization have been met, but despite proclamations and programmes, only a small minority of countries has carried out a genuine privatization process, completely transferring ownership of state-owned enterprises to the private sector. A lack of political will is to some extent at the root of this reluctance. However this reluctance can be traced back partly to structural factors that would make an orderly privatization difficult, such as the absence of developed capital markets, appropriate regulation, and suitable institutions.

A useful addition to the privatization literature. (Choice)

I'm a Freaking Genius: Why Is This Business So Hard?

Welcome to the back of my book. I had a feeling we would meet like this. I am going to take a wild guess that you are a wise human being trying to decide whether or not this book is for real. Allow me to interject two quick thoughts as you weigh out this high dollar, potentially life changing purchase: Excellent Point #1: My yacht isn t going to pay for itself- here is your big chance to do your part. Equally Excellent Point #2: YOUR yacht won t pay for itself, either. I know, I know, there is probably only a 60-80 percent chance you have a yacht payment (you probably own yours free and clear), but the fact remains, you aren t allergic to money you are a Freaking GENIUS and your business isn t behaving. You might want to sit down for these bullets a couple are gonna sting Tired of putting up with crabby customers? Feel like you just can t get to the next level ? Sick of your business owning you instead of the other way around? Want to know what the people who have more success with less effort know? Sick of reading books that have a lot of great sounding concepts, but don t tell you exactly what to do NOW? Did a silent, single tear just slide down your left cheek? You, friend, are in the right place! The genius outburst that you now hold is full of things you can do today to start living the life you want. Only one question remains... Who am I and why should you care? Fair question. My name is Mike Campion and I am just a run of the mill business owner who has spent the last two decades working his tail off passionately buying, selling, and studying the art of business. I have built, bought, and sold multiple businesses and went through a lot of brain damage in the process. I eat, drink, sleep, and sadly shower with thoughts of how to make better businesses and happier business owners dancing in my head. This book is twenty years of figuring junk out, compressed into a hundred and eighty pages of ACTIONABLE business strategies that have worked in my life and the lives of those I have worked with and studied. If your juices aren t flowing, put this book down, slowly back away and maybe check out one of those Harry Potter books I ve heard so much about. If this is getting you fired up, quit fooling around run to the register, throw whatever money you have at the cashier, run to the safety of your car and start reading immediately!"

Post-Photography: The Artist with a Camera (Elephant Books)

The real world is full of cameras; the virtual world is full of images. Where does all this photographic activity leave the artist-photographer? Post-Photography tries to answer that question by investigating the exciting new language of photographic image-making that is emerging in the digital age of anything-ispossible and everything-has-been-done-before. Found imagery has become increasingly important in post-photographic practice, with the internet serving as a laboratory for a major kind of imagemaking experimentation. But artists also continue to create entirely original works using avant-garde techniques drawn from both the digital and analogue eras. This book is split into five sections – Something Borrowed, Something New; Layers of Reality; All the World Is Staged; Hand and Eye; and Post- Photojournalism – which cover the key strategies adopted by 53 of the most exciting and innovative international artist-photographers of the 21st century.

New York Water Towers

Think of the movies, think of any photographic image of the New York skyline and there will undoubtedly be water towers; features that are as much a recognisable part of the city as the yellow taxi cabs and the street signs. Ronnie Farley has documented these New York monoliths for over 20 years from every angle and time of day; a beautifully photographed and original collection.

Ronnie Farley is a photographer who has lived in New York City for over twenty years. During that time, she has worked at Associated Press as a photo librarian and national photo editor, and as an independent freelancer. Currently, she divides her time between New York City, upstate New York and the open road, working mostly for Native American non-profit organisations. Her photographs have been published in Rolling Stone, USA Today, The Village Voice and the New York Daily News; she has been exhibited throughout the United States and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of the City of New York and The Museum of the American Indian in New York City, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, The Nicolaysen Museum in Casper, Wyoming, The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth Texas, and the Kultur Bodensee, in Salem, Germany.

War-Time Strikes and Their Adjustment (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from War-Time Strikes and Their Adjustment

The writer has endeavored in the following pages to give as complete an account as space and available material will allow of the labor difficulties which occurred during the war and of the machinery which was created to adjust them. It has, of course, been impossible to deal with every one of the thousands of strikes which took place - even controversies of considerable size and importance had to be omitted - nor has any attempt been made to thoroughly cover the events of the post-armistice period. But inasmuch as most of the labor difficulties after the signing of the armistice were directly connected with those which took place during the war itself, it was considered desirable to include some of these later occurrences as far as such a course was practicable.

This book is based upon the writer's personal experiences in Government work during the war, upon statements made to him by officials of Government Boards, employers, union leaders and others, and upon awards and reports of labor adjustment agencies, the testimony taken at many hearings, the Monthly Labor Review of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other publications of the U. S. Department of Labor, economic journals and the publications of trade unions, corporations and employers' associations, the Congressional Record, and the newspaper files.

Many of the chapters have been submitted to the men who were connected with the labor boards during the war. Some of the errors which are almost unavoidable in a presentation of facts covering so wide a range have in this manner been eliminated. The writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness for this help and also for the cordial cooperation with which his requests for information and material have been received by members of labor adjustment boards, employers and labor unions.

Megacity Slums: Social Exclusion, Space and Urban Policies in Brazil and India (Urban Challenges)

This book looks at slums and social exclusion in the four major megacities of India and Brazil, and analyzes the interrelationships between urban policies and housing and environmental issues. The challenges posed in Delhi, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have spurred public reformers into action through housing, rehabilitation and conservation programs. Civil society and the inhabitants of these cities have also begun to get involved. On the other hand, one must wonder whether these challenges were partly created by the deficiencies of these very reformers and civil society, be it their lack of intervention (as advocates of government intervention would argue), or the flaws and inadequacies of their actions (as supporters of the free market would suggest). Are policies alleviating or aggravating social exclusion? This book explores these questions and more.

A very rich empirical book, well illustrated, highly stimulating through the analysis of the approaches that are proposed, as well as by its theoretical considerations. --Géocarrefour

Steve McCurry: Afghanistan (Fo)

War and Grace
Magnum photographer Steve McCurry's Afghanistan retrospective

Afghanistan is a country overwhelmed by tribal rivalries, colonial wars, and geo-political conflict. The Afghans have always called their mountains "the land of rebellion."

Yet born of such chaos, such entrenched conflict are these most breathtaking and beautiful of images. The distinguished American photographer Steve McCurry has traveled to Afghanistan regularly for more than 40 years: he is arguably the most accomplished photographer to work in the region.

His famous 1984 portrait Afghan Girl--sad and haunting, but at the same time evoking remarkable grace and dignity--published on the covers of magazines around the world is perhaps his single most striking portrait. In common with so much of McCurry's work, it has a timeless, painterly quality--entirely at odds with the battle-torn backdrop of the region in which it was taken.

Steve McCurry has always been subjected to the same dangers that are an inevitable part of life "on the road" for photographers. He has often ventured behind the lines, usually at great risk; his first assignment in Afghanistan in 1979 involved him dressing in Afghan robes in order to be smuggled across the border from Pakistan.

That journey, into the treacherous, unpredictable landscape--territory controlled at various times by the Mujahideen, the Russians, and the Taliban--was one that McCurry would make many times. Many other photographers would follow in his footsteps. But none would return with such a flawless body of work.

Steve McCurry was born in Philadelphia, PA, and has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than forty years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name. After numerous travels throughout India, the Middle East and Afghanistan, he founded ImagineAsia in 2004, with the mission to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.

The Iliad

With her virtuoso translation, classicist and bestselling author Caroline Alexander brings to life Homer's timeless epic of the Trojan War

Composed around 730 B.C., Homer's Iliad recounts the events of a few momentous weeks in the protracted ten-year war between the invading Achaeans, or Greeks, and the Trojans in their besieged city of Ilion. From the explosive confrontation between Achilles, the greatest warrior at Troy, and Agamemnon, the inept leader of the Greeks, through to its tragic conclusion, The Iliad explores the abiding, blighting facts of war.

Soldier and civilian, victor and vanquished, hero and coward, men, women, young, old--The Iliad evokes in poignant, searing detail the fate of every life ravaged by the Trojan War. And, as told by Homer, this ancient tale of a particular Bronze Age conflict becomes a sublime and sweeping evocation of the destruction of war throughout the ages.

Carved close to the original Greek, acclaimed classicist Caroline Alexander's new translation is swift and lean, with the driving cadence of its source--a translation epic in scale and yet devastating in its precision and power.

Spirited and provocative . . . a nobly bold even rousing venture . . . it would be hard to find a faster, livelier, more compact introduction to such a great range of recent Iliadic explorations. --New York Times"Penetrating . . . reflecting her own skills [Alexander] provides her own translation of an entire chapter . . . a real bonus for the reader, comparing favorably with Lattimore and Fagles. --Boston Globe"A tour de force, Alexander . . . We can see from what [Alexander] has done that a fine translation may well be the most elegant and revealing form of commentary. --New York Review of Books"True to the living word of the original Greek, Caroline Alexander s new translation invites us to engage directly with this tradition. When I read her verses I can almost hear the music of Homeric performance. --Gregory Nagy, Francis Jones Professor of Classical Greek Literature and professor of comparative literature, director of the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University"Caroline Alexander has done admirably in rendering the meaning of the Homeric text faithfully and in suitably dignified language. The format gives a genuine sense of reading a verse epic. Her line-numbers match the Greek, which will make this version convenient for use by college teachers and students. --M.L. West, Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford"Caroline Alexander s "Iliad" is miraculous . . . Its language conveys the precise meaning of the Greek in a sinewy yet propulsive style . . . In my judgment, this new translation is far superior to the familiar and admired work of Lattimore, Fitzgerald, and Fagles. --G.W. Bowersock, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton"This powerful and readable version of the Iliad is modern without sacrificing the accuracy, energy, or the seriousness of the original. --Library Journal""True to the living word of the original Greek, Caroline Alexander's new translation invites us to engage directly with this tradition. Rustication: A Novel

Christmas 1863. Seventeen-year-old Richard Shenstone has been sent down from Cambridge under a cloud of suspicion. Addicted to opium and tormented by disturbing sexual desires, he finds temporary refuge in the creaking old mansion inhabited by his newly impoverished mother and his sister, Effie, whose behaviour grows increasingly bizarre. Threatening letters circulate among the locals, where almost anyone can be considered a suspect in a series of crimes and misdemeanours ranging from vivisection to murder. Fans of Charles Palliser's books, as well as readers of Sarah Waters and Michel Faber, will delight in this, his first new novel in over ten years. Hailed for fiction that is "mesmerizing, meticulous" (Entertainment Weekly), Palliser confirms his reputation as "our leading contemporary Victorian novelist" (The Guardian).

"Palliser creates a deliciously gothic atmosphere, particularly in his descriptions of the landscape[...]" Stephanie Merritt, The Observer"Palliser s hold on his narrative is enough to turn it into an exercise in pure form. As in a superior detective novel, character, scene and incidental detail fade away and all that remains is the thrill of the chase[...]" The Spectator"a twisting, mesmerising story" The Times"Palliser adds the modern pleasure of ambiguity to this rich and authentic confection of Gothic suspense." The Independent"[Riddles are ultimately, satisfyingly unraveled and a darker reality about genteel Victorian society revealed than novelists of that era ever dared imagine." --The Daily Mail"Palliser adds the modern pleasure of ambiguity to this rich and authentic confection of Gothic suspense." --The Independent"Palliser s hold on his narrative is enough to turn it into an exercise in pure form. Epic: Britain's Heroic Muse 1790-1910

This book is the first to provide a connected history of epic poetry in Britain between the French Revolution and the First World War.Although epic is widely held to have been shouldered aside by the novel, if not invalidated in advance by modernity, in fact the genre was practised without interruption across the long nineteenth century by nearly every prominent Romantic and Victorian poet, and shoals of ambitious poetasters into the bargain.Poets kept the epic alive by revising its conventions to meet an overlapping series of changing realities: insurgent democracy, Napoleonic war, the rise of class consciousness and repeated reform of the franchise, challenges posed by scientific advance to religious belief and cherished notions of the human, the evolution of a postnationalist and eventually imperialist identity for Britain as the world's superpower. Each of these developments called on nineteenth-century epic to do what the genre had always done: affirm the unity of its sponsoring culture through a large utterance that both acknowledged the distinctive flowering of the modern and affirmed its rootedness in tradition. The best writers answered this call by figuring Britain's self-renewal and the genre's as versions of one another. In passing Herbert Tucker notices scores of mediocre congeners (and worse), so as to show where the challenge of a given decade fell and suggest what lay at stake. The background these lesser works provide throws into relief what the book stresses in extended discussions of several dozen major works: an unbroken history of daring experimentation in which circumspect, inventive, worried epoists engaged because the genre and the age alike demanded it.

This is a marvellous book, epic in theme and ambition, epic in size, but thoroughly justified in its monumentality. (Isobel Armstrong, Victorian Studies)Tucker's (Andrew Stauffer, Victorian Poetry)I urge Romanticists and Victorianists to pick up this study of (Linda H. Peterson, Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies)True to his subject, [Tucker] narrates epic's vicissitudes through the century as though it were a battle landscape, in analogy-rich language with no middle flight, where epic poems can be airlifted in and out of cultural embargoes ... crucial to its value are the little-known poets who inhabit this book by the score. Henry & Leo

Leo isn't just a stuffed toy, he is Henry's best friend and brother. He is as real as a tree, a cloud, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the wind. But when the two are accidentally separated, no one in Henry's family believes Leo is real enough to find his way home. With beautiful mixed-media paintings, the Caldecott Honor-winning artist Pamela Zagarenski explores the transcendent nature of friendship and love.

Dragonwatch: A Fablehaven Adventure

The dragons that have been kept in sanctuaries want their freedom--and their revenge--and the world's only hope is the reformation of the ancient order of Dragonwatch in this New York Times bestselling first novel of a new sequel series to Fablehaven from author Brandon Mull.

In the hidden dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost, Celebrant the Just, King of the Dragons, plots his revenge. He has long seen the sanctuaries as prisons, and he wants nothing more than to overthrow his captors and return the world to the Age of Dragons, when he and his kind ruled and reigned without borders. The time has come to break free and reclaim his power.

No one person is capable of stopping Celebrant and his dragon horde. It will take the ancient order of Dragonwatch to gather again if there is any chance of saving the world from destruction. In ancient times, Dragonwatch was a group of wizards, enchantresses, dragon slayers, and others who originally confined the majority of dragons into sanctuaries. But nearly all of the original Dragonwatch members are gone, and so the wizard Agad reaches out to Grandpa Sorenson for help.

As Kendra and Seth confront this new danger, they must draw upon all their skills, talents, and knowledge as only they have the ability to function together as a powerful dragon tamer. Together they must battle against forces with superior supernatural powers and breathtaking magical abilities.

How will the epic dragon showdown end? Will dragons overthrow humans and change the world as we know it?

Resolution of Disputes Between Foreign Banks and Chinese Sovereign Borrowers, Public and Private International Law Aspects (Studies in Comparative Corporate & Financial Law)

In recent years the People's Republic of China has experienced rapid economic growth, brought about in large measure by dramatic increases in foreign trade and investment. China's adoption of an open door' policy in the late 1970s also opened up its banking market to foreigners. As a result, there has been a sharp rise in the number of disputes between Chinese sovereign borrowers and foreign banks, making the availability of appropriate dispute resolution mechanisms for foreign banks a critical factor in the expansion of international finance in China. This book recognizes the need for a unique international dispute forum that addresses intricate political and diplomatic considerations and issues of state sovereignty, issues that typically arise from disputes regarding state contracts between national governments and private foreign parties. The work addresses several problematic private and public international law issues in sovereign debt litigation, including: the state immunity theory the act of state doctrine forum non conveniens the difficulty in enforcing foreign judgments It offers a comprehensive survey of the many choices open to a foreign bank operator in planning a dispute resolution strategy in China, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each process, and examining a series of case studies by way of illustration. The author argues that the autonomy of each party in international arbitration circumvents potential cultural and conceptual difficulties and offers a flexible, mutually acceptable means of conflict resolution which in some circumstances can prove more effective than litigation. Arbitration and the recognition and enforcement of an arbitral award may be recognized as providing a level playing field for international financial transactions between states and foreign private parties, and the non-adversarial nature of the arbitration process makes it particularly appropriate in the Chinese context.

Narrators and Focalizers: The Presentation of the Story in the Iliad (BCP)

Acclaimed as one of the pioneering texts to introduce narratology (the theory that deals with the general principles underlying narrative texts) to classical scholarship, Irene de Jong's work explains the key concepts such as "narrator", "focalization" and "prolepsis", highlighting their relevance by using them for the analysis and interpretation of Homer's "Iliad". What is the role of the narrator and how do the parts of the story told by the narrator relate to the many speeches for which Homer is famous? This work was first published in 1987 and it is reissued here with a new introduction by the author, offering an overview of the trends in Homeric narratological scholarship over the last decade.

The Looking Glass House

What happened before Alice fell down the rabbit hole?

Oxford, 1862. As Mary Prickett takes up her post as governess to the daughters of the Dean of Christ Church, she is thrust into a strange new world. Mary is poor and plain and desperate for change but the little girls in her care see and understand far more than their naive new teacher. And there is another problem: Mary does not like children, especially the precocious Alice Liddell.

When Mary meets Charles Dodgson, the Christ Church mathematics tutor, at a party at the Deanery, she wonders if he may be the person to transform her life. Flattered by his attentions, Mary begins to believe that she could be more than just an overlooked, dowdy governess.

One sunny day, as Mary chaperones the Liddells on a punting trip, Mr Dodgson tells the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. But Mary is determined to become Mr Dodgson's muse - and will turn all the lives around her topsy-turvey in pursuit of her obsession.

As Alice Liddell's great-granddaughter, Vanessa Tait's insider information and access to letters and diaries give the familiar back-story a new slant. Her captivating book conjures up the topsy-turvy world of Alice - the factual and the fictional girl. It is a story that is both whimsical and disturbing. -- Lyndsy Spence Lady Tait's engaging novel peeps behind Carroll's story...Her style is sensuous and lyrical, her story neatly infused with Wonderland imagery and historically accurate dialogue... This story isn't about Alice. It runs, White Rabbit-like, away from childhood towards a more grown-up reflection on one of the greatest children's books. -- Rachel Hoyes Sunday Telegraph Moving and original. -- Kate Saunders The Times

Manflower

Manflower follows the life of Benny Lastfein and his journey through the seedy underbelly of Hollywood during the roaring twenties and onwards.Benny's life is loosely based on Abe Kronenberg, an assistant to many top honchos in Hollywood. Like Abe, Benny worked for four major studios-Paramount, MGM, RKO, and Columbia.Benny's path crosses many in the industry, and he rubbed shoulders with Hollywood's elite. He had the inside scoop on many a star, producer, and director and the debauched lives they led: Mae West, Norma Shearer, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Howard Hughes, Jane Russell, and Rita Hayworth, to name just a few. Along with being Man-Friday to many a Hollywood executive, Benny helped with perfume marketing campaigns specifically developed to bolster films and celebrities. Each perfume was branded according to the star; each contained pheromones meant to drive audiences wild and wanting for more. Successful films and their stars reached the apex of popularity thanks to these sensorial overloads. In their quest to find the fountain of youth, many of Benny's acquaintances dabbled in aphrodisiacs from their perfume business-the secret ingredients derived from the essences from various exotic animals, including the elusive Houbara Bustard. Down this path Benny also ventured, hoping to recapture the narcissistic and hedonistic glory of their heydays, disappearing into the annals of film lore.Manflower depicts the volatile lifestyle that comes with the trappings of money, celebrity and fame. The glamour and glitz were as real as the people that lived them. Enjoy! I loved re-reading Abe Kronenberg's notes and creating this story for you. Also, thanks to Rachel Maddow at MSNBC for posting the story of the Bustard in the first place!Dennis Doph,Santa Barbara,November 2014

Charles Brockden Brown - Wieland: or, The Transformation

Wieland: or, The Transformation: An American Tale is a Gothic novel by Charles Brockden Brown, first published in 1798. It recounts the terrifying story of how Theodore Wieland is driven to madness and murder by a malign ventriloquist called Carwin.

Charles Brockden Brown (January 17, 1771 – February 22, 1810) was an American novelist, historian, and editor of the Early National period. He is generally regarded by scholars as the most important American novelist before James Fenimore Cooper. He is the most frequently studied and republished practitioner of the "early American novel," or the US novel between 1789 and roughly 1820. Although Brown was not the first American novelist, as some early criticism claimed, the breadth and complexity of his achievement as a writer in multiple genres (novels, short stories, essays and periodical writings of every sort, poetry, historiography, reviews) makes him a crucial figure in US literature and culture of the 1790s and first decade of the 19th century, and a significant public intellectual in the wider Atlantic print culture and public sphere of the era of the French Revolution. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

The Beginning of Terror: Psychological Study of Rainer Maria Rilke's Life and Work (Literature & Psychoanalysis)

The insights here are of such depth, and contain such beauty in them, that time and again the reader must pause for breath. At last Rilke has met a critic whose insight, courage, and humanity are worthy of his life and work." -Leslie Epstein Director, Graduate Creative Writing Program, Boston University"[A] well-reasoned, fairly fascinating, and illuminating study which soundly and convincingly applies Freudian and particularly post-Freudian insights into the self, to Rilke's life and work, in a way which enlightens us considerably as to the relationship between life and work in original ways. Kleinbard takes off where Hugo Simenauer's monumental psycho- biography of Rilke (1953) left off. . . . He succeeds in giving us a psychic portrait of the poet which is more illuminating and which . . . does greater justice to its subject than any of his predecessors.. . . . Any reader with strong interest in Rilke would certainly welcome the availability of this study." -Walter H. Sokel,Commonwealth Professor of German and English Literatures,University of Virginia. For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are just able to bear, and we wonder at it so because it calmly disdainsto destroy us." -RilkeBeginning with Rilke's 1910 novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, The Beginning of Terror examines the ways in which the poet mastered the illness that is so frightening and crippling in Malte and made the illness a resource for his art. Kleinbard goes on to explore Rilke's poetry, letters, and non-fiction prose, his childhood and marriage, and the relationship between illness and genius in the poet and his work, a subject to which Rilke returned time and again. This psychoanalytic study also defines the complex connections between Malte's and Rilke's fantasies of mental and physical fragmentation, and the poet's response to Rodin's disintegrative and re-integrative sculpture during the writing of The Notebooks and New Poems. One point of departure is the poet's sense of the origins of his illness in his childhood and, particularly, in his mother's blind, narcissistic self- absorption and his father's emotional constriction and mental limitations. Kleinbard examines the poet's struggle to purge himself of his deeply felt identification with his mother, even as he fulfilled her hopes that he become a major poet. The book also contains chapters on Rilke's relationships with Lou Andreas Salom and Aguste Rodin, who served as parental surrogates for Rilke.A psychological portrait of the early twentieth-century German poet, The Beginning of Terror explores Rilke's poetry, letters, non-fiction prose, his childhood and marriage. David Kleinbard focuses on the relationship between illness and genius in the poet and his work, a subject to which Rilke returned time and again.David Kleinbard is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Queens College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. His published work ranges from psychological studies of D.H. Lawrence and Faulkner, to essays on contemporary German and American poetry, and original fiction

Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity

Musical verse accompanies a milkman and his cranky kitty as they make their morning rounds. The milkman knows his hometown; he knows who needs ice cream for a birthday party, who just broke a leg, and who has a new baby. He even helps return a lost dog that's hiding along his route. This pitch-perfect, retro read-aloud's gentle sensibility is ideally matched with beautiful art that powerfully evokes an era of classic illustration.

The quirky helmer known for Boy Scout demeanor and twisted tales shares his creative vision in a surprisingly gentle tome informed by the underlying teachings of Transcendental Meditation. But don t worry: David Lynch, one-time creator of The Angriest Dog in the World comic, keeps the proselytizing to a minimum. He addresses topics ranging from working with wood (for it) to director s commentaries (against) in deceptively simple, yet ultimately affirming, chapters. There s much for fans and aspiring filmmakers to enjoy.VarietyIdeas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper," says David Lynch the idiosyncratic filmmaker whose creations include Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the cult TV classic, Twin Peaks. He claims that he has savored the pleasures of diving deep thanks to a 33-year practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He describes the fun of gathering what he calls "firewood" (all kinds of ideas and things for a film), the joy he takes in seeing an aging building or a rusted bridge, and the respect he has for Fellini and Kubrick. Lynch loves making movies and diving deep, and this testament bears witness to both loves.Spirituality & PracticeIn Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, David Lynch puts aside his filmic quest to get inside the viewer s head and lets them instead inside his, an invitation almost as rare as a ticket to fiction s Wonka Chocolate Factory, and possibly just as out of this world. Catching the Big Fish is a blend of thoughts and themes, sometimes random like a stream of consciousness, or the analogy he personally prefers for creativity casting a hook into a bottomless sea. The book melds biography, film analysis, philosophy and spirituality with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, while incorporatinga narrative ofthe author s passion for charting the world of dreams and ideas and rendering them unto action.BlogCriticsWith this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. The Warning: Accident at Three Mile Island: Accident at Three Mile Island a Nuclear Omen for the Age of Terror

By 6:00 a.m. on the morning of March 28, 1979, the reactor core at Three Mile Island was thirty minutes away from a meltdown, an apocalypse that would render a huge swath of eastern Pennsylvania permanently uninhabitable. The control room crew, overwhelmed by flashing alarms and klaxon horns, is at a loss. The memo that would have warned them was never sent. Originally published in 1982, this factual, riveting thriller was the first account of the accident based on exclusive interviews with key operating personnel. Mike Gray, author of The China Syndrome, and Ira Rosen, former producer for CBS's 60 Minutes, have updated this jackhammer narrative of mechanical failure and human error with an analysis of the current threats to our nuclear power plants. Today the nuclear option is again on the table. Before we head down that road, it's important to understand what went wrong that fateful morning when the future of Harrisburg hung by a thread.

"This book is as explosive as the explosion it warns us about. It is as suspenseful as a good novel.""A ripping thriller, made more compelling by the fact that it is true."The Warning is a book you must read. Not because it is 'good for you.' Not because it will build your social conscience. Not because it's topical. Not because it's a thriller. No, every educated American ought to read this account of 'what really happened' at Three Mile Island because this narrative represents the best in nonfiction, in virtuoso reporting If you read no other book in the next five years, by all means read The Warning! "A gripping fiction-like account that almost seems to place the reader in the midst of the crisis that developed when the reactor's cooling system failed. "This book is as explosive as the explosion it warns us about. It is as suspenseful as a good novel.--Studs TerkelA ripping thriller, made more compelling by the fact that it is true.--Jack Anderson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist

Selling the Right Way, Prayerfully God's Way: Unlock the God-Given Sales Talent Within You

Most sales publications cover selling exclusively from the world's point-of-view. They cover a topic or two that may peak the interest of the reader, but they leave out two elements that are critical to a Christian sales professional's success. What are those two essentials you need to know? They are: 1.) Where does God fit into your life as a salesperson, and 2.) What else do you need to know to be a long-term sales pro?

You see, selling is more than one or two techniques that will manipulate your prospect into buying. It's more than a few closing techniques that will seal-the-deal. Sales is an ability you are given, by God, to help other people solve their problems. You are a problem solver, an advocate for your client. This book will help you become the best you can be, with prayer and God's guidance.

JIM ABRAHAM is the president and founder of Jim Abraham Sales and Marketing, a training firm that helps small to medium-sized businesses and their sales people become more God-honoring and successful. Jim has been a successful sales professional for over thirty-five years. He "carried a bag" as a salesperson, and he was a sales trainer as well as a national sales manager, and worked with three of the world's largest medical corporations, Baxter, C. R. Bard, and Edwards Lifesciences. Jim has been blessed to be able to help hundreds of new and experienced salespeople become top 5% sales performers. Jim's unique style of presenting this groundbreaking information may be why he is one of the most sought after Christian sales and marketing trainers. I'm sure you will find that his Builder Sales Model and his common-sense approach are the secrets you've been waiting for. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Black Beauty (Children's Illustrated Classics)

Black Beauty is an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she remained in her house as an invalid. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but having lived long enough to see her only novel become a success. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. While forthrightly teaching animal welfare, it also teaches how to treat people with kindness, sympathy, and respect. In 2003, the novel was listed at number 58 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.PLOT: The story is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memoir told by the titular horse named Black Beauty—beginning with his carefree days as a colt on an English farm with his mother, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, to his happy retirement in the country. Along the way, he meets with many hardships and recounts many tales of cruelty and kindness. Each short chapter recounts an incident in Black Beauty's life containing a lesson or moral typically related to the kindness, sympathy, and understanding treatment of horses, with Sewell's detailed observations and extensive descriptions of horse behaviour lending the novel a good deal of verisimilitude. The book describes conditions among London horse-drawn taxicab drivers, including the financial hardship caused to them by high licence fees and low, legally fixed fares. A page footnote in some editions says that soon after the book was published, the difference between 6-day taxicab licences (not allowed to trade on Sundays) and 7-day taxicab licences (allowed to trade on Sundays) was abolished and the taxicab licence fee was much reduced. Anna Sewell (30 March 1820 – 25 April 1878) was an English novelist, best known as the author of the classic 1877 novel Black Beauty. Biography: Anna Sewell was born on 30 March 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, into a devoutly Quaker family. Her father was Isaac Phillip Sewell (1793–1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798–1884) was a successful author of children's books. She had one sibling, a younger brother named Philip and was largely educated at home. When she was twelve, the family moved to Stoke Newington where she attended school for the first time. Two years later, however, she slipped while walking home from school and severely injured her ankles. Her father took a job in Brighton in 1836, in the hope that the climate there would help to cure her. Despite this, and most likely because of mistreatment of her injury, for the rest of her life she could not stand without a crutch or walk for any length of time. For greater mobility, she frequently used horse-drawn carriages, which contributed to her love of horses and concern for the humane treatment of animals. At about this time, both Sewell and her mother left the Society of Friends to join the Church of England, though both remained active in evangelical circles. Her mother expressed her religious faith most noticeably by authoring a series of evangelical children's books, which she helped to edit, though all the Sewells, and Mary Sewell's family, the Wrights, engaged in many other good works. While seeking to improve her health in Europe, Sewell encountered various writers, artists, and philosophers, to which her previous background had not exposed her.....

Hugs and Kisses (A Michael Neugebauer book)

An irresistibly appealing puppy named Hugs sets out one morning on a quest. He asks every animal he meets for a kiss, and they are all happy to oblige. The pup discovers that duck's kisses are hard and wet; a horse's kiss is a little sticky, but very warm; the pig's kiss is a little muddy and bristly, tickley but tender. He collects lots of wonderful kisses, but when he returns home, he discovers that the best kiss of all is the one he gets from his loving mother.

"With fur that seems real enough to touch. a sunny disposition, and sweet manners, Hugs is a real charmer.""Like a kiss itself, this tale may well be the subject of repeated requests.""Rare is the child, parent, or older sibling who will be able to resist this invitation to mix reading with kissing."""Rare is the child, parent, or older sibling who will be able to resist this invitation to mix reading with kissing.""

Parsha Stix Vayikra Teacher's Edition

For over 25 years, Rabbi Elchonon Goldenberg has been teaching Parsha in a unique way that kept his students enthralled and helped them remember it for years after. An artist by nature, his simple stick figures are like no other, the expressions accurate, the details vivid, capturing Midrashim and Rashis with accuracy. His style of teaching still continues and remains very effective, leaving children with accurate memories of what they were taught in school.- Parsha Stix simplifies complicated scenes by limiting detail, while including many important aspects all at once.- The words from the actual Posuk are on the page, so children can mentally associate the words they follow in Shul with the words they read in class.- The easy format allows children to remember accurate details as they say over the Parsha at their Shabbos table.- The sheets bridge the gap between school and home, illustrating to parents how much their children gain in their school and helping children retain information learned in a different location. In response to the numerous requests to publish this work which teachers have been using in its raw form for many years, we are pleased to present the first edition in booklet form. Since the objective of this booklet is greater understanding of the Parsha through the use of stick figures, it has been named “Parsha Stix,” subtitled “Nir'eh V'Nishma ,” “We will see and we will understand.”

Our Souls at Night

'I loved Our Souls at Night' David Nicholls

This is a love story.
A story about growing old with grace.

Addie Moore and Louis Waters have been neighbours for years. Now they both live alone, their houses empty of family, their quiet nights solitary. Then one evening Addie pays Louis a visit.

Their brave adventures form the beating heart of Our Souls at Night, Kent Haruf's exquisite final novel.

The language is straightforward and stripped back, calm and unassuming. And it all combines to make a novel which, like Louis and Addie's relationship does for them, warms and expands the heart . . . the sentiment that lingers most, on finishing this beautiful, tranquil, tender novel, is contentment (Observer)Simple, low-key and absolutely beautiful. (The Times)I loved Kent Haruf's small-town love story (David Nicholls)To ring true, description of even the humblest kind of fulfilment and contentment must be written in awareness of human inadequacy and cruelty and the possibility of illness, ruin, death. One false word can make it all incredible. I don't think there's a false word in Kent Haruf's final novel, Our Souls in the Night . . . Many novels have been about the pursuit of happiness, but this one is luminous with its actual presence . . . Perhaps happiness is less predictable than misery, since it partakes of freedom. Like freedom, also, it's never secure; it can't be for ever. But it can be real, and in this beautiful novel, we can share it (Ursula K Le Guin Guardian)So beautiful; quietly gripping, full of love, humour and gentle shocks. Our Souls at Night is a perfect tribute to a truly extraordinary writer. (Donal Ryan, author of The Spinning Heart)A humane, deeply affecting final novel (Daily Mail)His great subject was the struggle of decency against small-mindedness, and his rare gift was to make sheer decency a moving subject . . . This novel runs on the dogged insistence that simple elements carry depths, and readers will find much to be grateful for. (New York Times)Gritty, painful and human . . . his novels are imbued with an affection and understanding that transform the most mundane details into poetry . . . Haruf's final novel is a beacon of hope; he is sorely missed (Francesca Wade Financial Times)A delicate, sneakily devastating evocation of place and character . . . Haruf's story accumulates resonance through carefully chosen details; the novel is quiet but never complacent (New Yorker)Short, spare and moving . . . Our Souls at Night is already creating a stir. (Wall Street Journal)An eloquent story of a man and a woman who, in advanced age, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the future. (Red Magazine)Utterly charming and distilled to elemental purity . . . such a tender, carefully polished work that it seems like a blessing we had no right to expect. (Ron Charles Washington Post)A novel full of kindness, open-heartedness and grace, of ordinary experiences and commonplace regret . . . unputdownable as a thriller - an unlikely page-turner full of quiet surprises . . . It's an astonishing piece of writing (Literary Review)In a fitting and gorgeous end to a body of work that prizes resilience above all else, Haruf has bequeathed readers a map charting a future that is neither easy nor painless, but it's also not something we have to bear alone. (Esquire)If you haven't read Kent Haruf's wonderful backlist, now is the time to discover it. Or jump in at the end, with this novel; a graceful story . . . a melancholy reminder that happiness can be fragile. (Psychologies Magazine)Gripping and tender . . . a sweet love story, a deep friendship . . . with a stunning sense of all that's passed and the precious importance of the days that remain. (Publishers Weekly)

England's Maritime Heritage from the Air

England has a long and involved relationship with the sea. It has provided a final line of defence against invasion, the route over which the country's global trade has travelled, the source of a bountiful harvest of fish and seafood that has sustained the population, the essential links in the empire that saw Britain emerge as the world's first `Great Power', and, more recently, it has fostered the leisure industry. For many, the sea was to provide their final view of their homeland as emigration took them to far-flung corners of the world, while for others, perhaps fleeing religious or political persecution, the sea offered them a route to safety. For almost a century the photographers from the Aerofilms company recorded Britain from the air. Alongside the photographs taken of the great castles and abbeys of the country, the views also recorded industrial and commercial activity - including the docks and ports that were an essential part in maintaining Britain's place in the world. In this book, Peter Waller has delved through the collection of Aerofilms photographs held by Historic England to explore the country's maritime heritage. Selecting 150 images, the author looks at how the docks and ports have evolved since the years immediately after World War I, how traditional patterns of trade have changed, how the Royal Navy has shrunk and how the leisure industry has come to dominate.

Peter Waller has worked in the publishing industry for more than 30 years and is a specialist in industrial archaeology.
